The best pet carrier I've found. I have a wiggly 24-lb French bulldog, a bit too heavy and unwieldy to carry long distances in an airport (picture two moving bowling balls in a bag), so this wheeled carrier was just what I was looking for. Why not five stars? There are a few design quirks that make this tougher to use/travel with than it should be.First, the PROS:- The Large size is CONFIRMED to fit under a Southwest Airlines seat. I wasn't sure--even based on another reviewer's feedback--since the reported under-seat dimensions didn't seem vertically tall enough to accommodate this carrier. It does fit. (Pro tip: Pick the middle seat, which has more horizontal room than the window seat and far more than the aisle seat.)- Plenty of room in the Large carrier. My 24-lb French bulldog has enough room to turn around or even curl into half the carrier if he's napping all balled up. (He's a very muscular and compact 24 lbs, so please check the dimensions of the carrier against your pet since some fluffier, less muscular 20-lb dogs are somehow twice his size.) It's not quite tall enough for him to sit upright, but you don't want him doing that when it's rolling--it can wobble a bit due to the shifting weight.- The sides are rigid enough to hold the roof off your pet's head--unlike many soft carriers which collapse--but they can be squeezed down a bit if needed. He is not a fan of the soft-sided Southwest carrier that basically rests on top of his head even if he's lying down.- Handle is plenty long for someone of average height (I'm 5'10") to pull without having to lean over at all.- The tapered design allows a much easier fit under a plane seat. Push the narrow (solid fabric) end in, keep the taller mesh side facing you. It's then easy to unzip a corner and feed your pet ice cubes or treats during a flight.- The outside pocket is nice and roomy for carrying a leash, a toy or some poop bags.- Has a seatbelt strap on one side, for safe carriage in a vehicle- Has a mesh pocket for water bottles- Has a removable, washable, soft plush bottom surface, which is comfy for pets but easily cleaned in the sink- Wheelbase is removable, leaving this as a standard carrier with a rigid bottom and sturdy handle on top- Lightweight and folds completely flat--only a few inches tall folded flat with the wheelbase attached, good for storage- Wheels are sturdy enough to smoothly navigate all over a large airport (but I wouldn't try them on rough, potholed city streets)- Velcroed wheel platform can be attached in either direction, so you can pull the carrier with the mesh side facing the handle (you) or with the mesh side facing backward. That came in handy when *cough* sneaking my pet into a hotel that wanted to charge us a $150 nonrefundable pet fee for a night. In the black color, this can pass as regular wheeled luggage.- Includes an integrated leash/collar strap to ensure your pet doesn't run off the second you unzip the carrier.- Two zippered openings for the pet--one on the tall end (full mesh) and one on the top that wraps down the other, shorter side (solid fabric). I find it's easier to put him in through the top opening and let him come out the side opening.- The wheel base and handle assembly can fit nicely into the large pocket of a standard backpack, which you can place in the overhead as your personal item.- Southwest's crew doesn't seem to care that the front juts out a few inches, because guess what? The seatback in front of you also sways backward even farther than this carrier sticks out from under it. (The reason I mention SWA is that they're one of the few airlines that permits pets under seats in the cabin. Other airlines may be far more rigid about the rules.)And now for the CONS:- The handle and wheels are lightweight, but this also means they're delicate. They both fared very well through taxi rides and gentle handling by me in the airport. If you plan to yank and slam the handle around, pushing it in or pulling it out before it's properly oriented, prepare for it to break. If you plan to use these wheels on rough city streets, prepare for them to break. If you can be gentle with them, you should get years of use out of this carrier.- The wheels can't be pushed too much farther out to the sides, but if you're on uneven ground and an unruly pet is for some reason sitting his/her butt on the WALL of the carrier, it may tip over. This happened twice, and sure enough, Frenchie butt went tumbling sideways. Now I make sure he's not leaning on a side wall before I have to pull over a bump.- The Velcro on the bottom makes it SO hard to get this carrier under a plane seat. It has a couple of purposes: (1) to attach the carrier to the wheel base, and (2) to prevent the carrier from sliiiiding out from under the seat during the hard acceleration of takeoff. Due to the fact that this carrier will be quite tightly wedged under the seat anyway, reason (2) is pretty much not needed. With that said, I don't know why the sticky side of the Velcro wasn't put on the wheel base and the non-sticky side on the carrier. If you plan to use this on a plane and you aren't totally nimble, somewhat narrow and OK with getting up close and personal with the filth of a plane carpet, don't bother. To get this to actually slide under a plane seat, I have to get on my knees between the two rows of seats and put something very thin (e.g., the plane's safety card or drink card) between the carrier and the plane's carpet. Otherwise, that Velcro is not joking around. It will stick to the carpet, and you won't be able to budge the carrier unless you try to swipe your hand between the two to break the bond.- It's somewhat difficult to perfectly align the Velcro strips on the base with the Velcro strips on the carrier if you've got a pet in the carrier and are trying to do this yourself in a plane seat. And they need to be perfectly aligned for balance reasons and to ensure a solid connection.- In addition to the Velcro, there are two Velcroed straps that secure over a crossbar (housing the handle) running under the wheelbase. Those straps are a pain in the . . . If you're trying to get the wheel base back on by yourself with a pet inside, you have to lift the carrier with pet inside high enough to get the wheel base under it with both straps folded OUT. Then you have to lift or tilt the carrier enough to feel for which strap goes on top of the other--and you have to get them taut. Otherwise, they'll drag on the ground and not provide any security at all. All this juggling can be nerve-racking for the animal inside the carrier. I really wish the carrier-to-base connection had been some sort of snap or lever connection on the edges.With all these critiques, this is still the roomiest rolling carrier I've found that can fit under a plane seat. Due to three hours of delays on our trip, my Frenchie had to spend about 9 hours in the carrier, and he wasn't too ornery when he finally got out. Pics of him in the carrier are uploaded.
